Bubble tea, aka: boba tea, is a popular tea-based beverage that originated in Taiwan in the 1980s. Bubble Tea has since become a beloved drink around the world.  The history of bubble tea begins with the traditional Taiwanese tea culture, which dates back centuries. Tea has always been a significant part of Taiwanese life but it wasn’t until the 1980s that idea of combining traditional Taiwanese tea with various toppings to create a refreshing and delightful drink was thought of by Lin Hsiu Hui, a teahouse owner in Taipei. The result was a unique drink that offered a pleasant contrast of textures between the smooth tea and the chewy pearls. This innovative creation quickly gained attention and became known as “bubble tea” due to the bubbles that formed when the drink was shaken. While the original bubble tea featured black tea, milk, and tapioca pearls, variations emerged, such as fruit-flavored teas, milk teas, and slushies. Toppings expanded beyond tapioca pearls to include a range of ingredients like fruit jellies, aloe vera, and pudding. Today, bubble tea has become a favorite drink among people of all ages, offering a delightful combination of flavors, textures, and customizable options.
